This month wraps up the year for the 2011 Community Relations Committee for GLAR with our Milestone’s own Sherry Spanyer assuming the role of Committee Chair.  She will do a great job as Lester Sanders did this past year.

We accomplished many things for many people and organizations from all areas of our community.  Projects included VIPS, Repair Affair, Bowl-a-thon, the GLAR  Golf Outing  which raised over $9,000 with proceeds being split evenly between St. John Center for the Homeless and Gilda’s Club Louisville, Pay It Forward Campaign which benefited fifteen individuals or organizations and Camp Quality 2011 that supports children with cancer.  In spite of the difficult times for those in Louisville houses, it has been a great year being able to touch so many lives in a positive way. The Miller Team takes great pride in being able to participate.   In closing, I would like to share our video from this year’s Camp Quality.

The Annual Home Builders Association of Louisville Sales and Marketing Council Awards of Excellence Luncheon was held on January 25th at the Hurstbourne Country Club in Louisville, KK.

This is a very special luncheon where members of Homebuilders Association of Louisville are recognized by their peers for accomplishments of the previous year.  There are many different categories for Homebuilders and Associate members.

Some of the categories are marketing and selling Louisville houses while some categories recognize builders for their different designs and projects.  Realtors are recognized for the personal sales achievements for new construction.

New Orleans, LA hosted to the National Women’s Council of Realtors Convention for 2010 from November 3 – 7, at the Marriott on Canal Street.  I had a great visit! Not only did I see that New Orleans had returned to all its’ glory, but because I also had the opportunity to network with Realtors from all across the country.  There were many questions raised at the convention about newest selling strategies, best practices for working with buyers, and promoting our listings.  The answer was always “technology, technology, technology”!

Amy Chorew, Speaker

I took classes on Twitter, Blogging, Business Pages for Facebook, Smart Phones and all the new apps to help me sell more Louisville houses.  I was especially impressed with one pair of speakers; Shannon King and Amy Chorew, both experts in the field of Technology. Shannon is a recipient of NAR’s distinguished 30 under 30, a co-founder and an owner of two different Real Estate Companies. Amy Chorew is currently Director of Education and Training at the Social Media Marketing Institute as well as a nationally acclaimed real estate strategist and instructor. After four days at the convention and their words of wisdom, I returned to selling Louisville houses armed with a tweeked business design, more tools for my trade, and an action plan made for success!

As of April 22, 2010, federal law requires contractors who disturb more than 6 square feet of interior space or more than 20 square feet of exterior space on a home that was built prior to 1978, to be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination if the area disturbed in fact contains lead paint.

A disturbance can be described as sanding, scraping, tearing out, pressure washing or anything that would create dust.  The dust can be absorbed into the blood stream and/or the brain and can eventually get into your vital organs.

The new EPA rule allows owner occupants to perform work on their house without following the same specific work practices as a certified contractor would be required to follow.  However, if the work is performed by a contractor, they must be EPA Certified.

If sellers do the work themselves, they take the risk of being held responsible for any damage the work of disturbing the lead based paint may have created.  Therefore, sellers should be advised by their Realtor® to have the property tested for lead paint before any disturbance is begun. It is advisable to have the home tested before any estimates for repairs or replacements are given, as the outcome could affect the cost of the work to be done.

Realtors®  should take precaution to educate their buyers or sellers whenever the transaction involves a home built prior to 1978.  There are many Louisville houses that fall into this category, so be careful that everyone understands the new law.

Louisville Women's Council of Realtors, Business Expo, Oct., 12, 2010

Louisville Women's Council of Realtors, Business Expo, Oct., 12, 2010

The Louisville chapter of The Women’s Council of Realtors will host the first annual Business Expo on Tuesday, October 12th from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Wildwood Country Club on Bardstown Road in Louisville.

Over 400 Realtors are expected to attend giving exhibitors the chance to market their company, products and services to a large group of Realtors that sell Louisville houses.  The expo is a great opportunity for one on one quality face time with their most lucrative customers.

There will be plenty of free door prizes drawn every 30 minutes AND by visiting all the booths at the expo, participants can become eligible for the Grand Prize, which is a free annual dues at The Greater Louisville Association of Realtors.

The Women’s Council of Realtors is a network of successful Realtors empowering women to exercise their potential as entrepreneurs and industry leaders.  The Louisville chapter is made up of Realtors, lenders, and service suppliers that are interested in helping one another sell more Louisville homes by networking, sharing ideas and building relationships.

Now is the time to evaluate, educate and elevate yourself and your career by attending the Women’s Council of Realtors 2010 Business Expo!

This blog comes with mixed feelings in that it marks my last month as serving as the Chairperson of The Community Relation Committee of GLAR.   However, being the Chairperson of the most pro-active committee within our Association has not only been a privilege but has also provided me with the opportunity to work with associates that I did not know prior to this year and hopefully offer direction and leadership where necessary.
This has been a very successful year having participated in many great causes.  I would like to acknowledge those instrumental in making each project a success.

Visually Impaired Pre-School Walk/Run:  Lester Sanders
Repair Affair:  Leesa Hill
Fuller Center Project:  Grace Patterson, Sarai Gumm and Janet Sharber
Chest of Hope:  Virginia Gariepy
Kosair Meals:  Karen Bhatt
Dream Factory:  Karla Murphey
Charity Bowl-A-Thon:  Karen Story
Community Wide Clean-Up:  Sherry Spanyer
Camp Quality:  Leesa Hill, Paula Colvin
Gifts for Rosehaven:  Grace Patterson
Gifts for Family Scholar House:  Kristen Mennish

Without those listed along with all of the other members it would not have been possible to have reached out and touched so many people, young and old, in need.  However, we are not done yet!  Our last project of the year is “PAY IT FORWARD”.  At this year’s annual luncheon fifteen individuals or offices will be awarded with a check for $100.  It is their responsibility to use this for anything that they feel would be a good cause to help an individual or an organization in need.  Or, they can use it for a starter fund for a larger project. We continue in our daily lives, selling Louisiville houses to those in need, but also taking care of the people in them and stive to serve our community while making it stronger and better for generations to come.

Vote for Louise

Vote for Louise

I, Louise Miller, am running for the office of President–Elect at Greater Louisville Association of Realtors®.  I have been a pro-active member of this association, buying and selling Louisville houses for 27 years and found that it has helped me tremendously to become more informed and value the relationships I have made with my associates. Because I am also an active Realtor®, I am aware of the challenges we face each day. Our economy has proven tough in these past few years to say the least. It is not over yet, but we have great support at our association with staff, education and services.

If elected, I will:

  • Help to strategically guide and direct decisions for the association
  • Provide good leadership by utilizing past experience and knowledge
  • Maximize member benefits and facilitate access to these benefits locally, regionally and nationally
  • Work diligently to help fellow Realtors® create new opportunities in the present economy
  • Continue to make sure we expose the consumer to the great service we provide
  • Look for creative and innovative ways to always bring positive ideas and education to our membership

Experienced leadership is an important key to in any organization. I promise to provide that leadership. I need your help and support. Please vote and encourage your associates to do the same.

This coming Monday, you (the members of our board), will receive an email with instructions asking you to vote. I urge you to take the time to do this and I thank you for your consideration.
