Lexington Clinic Center for Breast Care to Hold Second Annual Pink Tree Lighting Charity Event

The Lexington Clinic Center for Breast Care’s Annual Pink Tree Lighting Ceremony is held in honor and in memory of loved ones affected by breast cancer. They feel privileged that they are able to have this event two years in a row. Many of our Bluegrass homes have been effected by this disease and it has touched so many of our lives. The event is open to the public and will be at the Lexington Clinic Center for Breast Care on December 2, 2010, from 6:00 p.m-7:00 p.m. Come to support or honor your loved one that have had to deal with the plight of breast cancer and celebrate their lives with refreshments and holiday music performed by the University of Kentucky Paws and Listen women’s a cappella choir. You can even donate a dollar or more to the American Cancer Society and the name of your loved one will be announced as the trees are lit. For more information or to make donations, call 859.258.4654.

I was privileged to attend “Ball Homes Night of Hope” last week at the Lexington Opera House . This was the second annual “Ball Homes Night of Hope” which benefits the men and women of the Hope Center.

Deborah Back, Cherie Butler, Judy Craft, and Beck Locknane at "Oh what a night!", a Ball Homes sponsored event.

The Hope Center was opened in 1993 and serves as a safe and accessible shelter for the homeless.  It also provides services that encourage movement out of shelter dependency.  The Hope Center’s Mission Statement is: To care for homeless and at-risk persons by providing life-rebuilding services that are comprehensive and address underlying causes.

In addition to some outstanding musicians and vocalists, best-selling author of “The Glass Castle”, Jeannette Walls, shared her inspirational story of growing up in a family struggling with homelessness, alcoholism and mental illness to ultimately bring a message of hope, perseverance and strength.

You know, when we are out there selling Louisville houses, whether to first time home buyers or buyers that are purchasing their second or third home, we sometimes forget that there are people that have no home.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to remember those in need and possibly homeless, as we approach the winter months.  Find an organization where you can contribute to helping provide HOPE,  as Ball Homes did at their “Night of Hope” .

Another great reason to live in a Louisville house - The Breeder's Cup

Louisville’s historic Churchill Downs will host the Breeders Cup 2010 on November 5th & 6th.  This will be the seventh time that the Breeders Cup World Championships have taken place at Churchill Downs.

This is Thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious global event and is the year-end Championships featuring the “best of the best”.  The event consists of 14 races and a $25.5 million in purses.

Churchill Downs, which is the legendary home of the Kentucky Derby, has been the site of six of the seven largest crowds in Breeders’ Cup history. Visitors from all over the world attend but you can “bet” that Louisville attendees make up a huge portion of the crowd.  Kentuckians love their horse racing!

I don’t know if many Louisville houses are sold as a result of the event, but we should seize the opportunity to market our beautiful city as being a great place to live!

This is not only wonderful for the track and the horse industry in Kentucky, but the business owners and the state and local governments will benefit from the economic boost  this major international event will provide to Louisville and to the Sate of Kentucky.

If you can’t attend, the event will be televised on ESPN, ABC and to a worldwide audience of more than 120 countries.

America’s Promise Alliance, names Lexington, Ky in the “100 Best Communities for Young People”. We provide several places to play and learn besides our wonderful schools and our Bluegrass homes. This increases not only your child’s social skills but their ability to focus in and out of the classroom. A three-time 100 Best winner, Lexington continues to keep with cutting edge opportunities for children by keeping them engaged.
Lexington strives to “change the face of education in Fayette County” at every turn to keep ahead of the best. Our efforts are to help ensure that every student in the Fayette County Public Schools receives a world-class education. We have also embarked upon the “2020 Vision Project” consisting of 21 work groups, each focusing on a different sector of education. This initiative developed recommendations to chart the course for a stellar school district. The Community Partnership Leadership Team, a subcommittee of the 2020 Vision plan, is increasing individual group impact through the donation of time, expertise, funds, and other resources for the benefit of nurturing healthy minds, bodies and good habits for children. Several other special interest groups have sprouted through this initiative to help us succeed in continuing to be the amongst best communities for young people for years to come

This blog comes with mixed feelings in that it marks my last month as serving as the Chairperson of The Community Relation Committee of GLAR.   However, being the Chairperson of the most pro-active committee within our Association has not only been a privilege but has also provided me with the opportunity to work with associates that I did not know prior to this year and hopefully offer direction and leadership where necessary.
This has been a very successful year having participated in many great causes.  I would like to acknowledge those instrumental in making each project a success.

Visually Impaired Pre-School Walk/Run:  Lester Sanders
Repair Affair:  Leesa Hill
Fuller Center Project:  Grace Patterson, Sarai Gumm and Janet Sharber
Chest of Hope:  Virginia Gariepy
Kosair Meals:  Karen Bhatt
Dream Factory:  Karla Murphey
Charity Bowl-A-Thon:  Karen Story
Community Wide Clean-Up:  Sherry Spanyer
Camp Quality:  Leesa Hill, Paula Colvin
Gifts for Rosehaven:  Grace Patterson
Gifts for Family Scholar House:  Kristen Mennish

Without those listed along with all of the other members it would not have been possible to have reached out and touched so many people, young and old, in need.  However, we are not done yet!  Our last project of the year is “PAY IT FORWARD”.  At this year’s annual luncheon fifteen individuals or offices will be awarded with a check for $100.  It is their responsibility to use this for anything that they feel would be a good cause to help an individual or an organization in need.  Or, they can use it for a starter fund for a larger project. We continue in our daily lives, selling Louisiville houses to those in need, but also taking care of the people in them and stive to serve our community while making it stronger and better for generations to come.

Kentucky Children's Hospital Pediatric Cancer Survivors Picnic 2010

Kentucky Children's Hospital Pediatric Cancer Survivors Picnic 2010

On August 28th, 2010 the Kentucky Children’s Hospital held a picnic from noon to 5 p.m. at the University of Kentucky’s E.S. Good Barn field. The picnic is in honor of all current patients and youths that have received treatment in the past. They are allowed to celebrate with their families and nurses to give them the opportunity to just let kids be kids for a day. The picnic wasn’t just an outside meal; there were inflatables, outdoor laser tag, games, a musical performance by Robert Bobbert, a martial arts performance, carnival food galore, a petting zoo, pony rides and prizes for all attendees. Stitches, the children’s hospital mascot also came to join in on the fun. Over 100 companies sponsored this picnic of over 400 guests and Milestone Realty Consultants was proud to be one of them. We sponsored the free t-shirts and invitations that the kids received as well as created a booth that had a caricaturist, a station where we applied temporary tattoos and gave away thousands of Silly Bandz. A special thanks to the Milestone staff that went out on their Saturday to run the booth, John Day, Steve Coffman, April Roe, Emily Estill, Joe Pennebaker, Rebecca Wilkinson, Beth Conover, Katie Rowan and Joyce Jewell. I am happy to say that our staff doesnt just care about Kentucky real estate, they care about people.

The Greater Louisville Association of Realtors (GLAR) held their “Annual Luncheon for the Installation of Officers and Directors” at the Seelbach Hotel in downtown Louisville, Tuesday September 14th.  Dennis Miller of Milestone Realty Consultants was the honorable MC for the event and did a wonderful job!

The attendance was overwhelming as Realtors came to show their support for their local Association.  Realtors that sell our Louisville houses were there to network, have a wonderful lunch and show their appreciation to their fellow Realtors for their years of service.

Milestone’s Louise Miller was installed as the 2011 President-Elect. She was elected by the members of the Greater Louisville Association of Realtors (GLAR) which has a membership of over 4000.  Louise will do a fantastic job for GLAR and Milestone is proud to have her as one of our team.

In addition to being installed Louise was recognized, along with Milestone’s Ray Wilson,  for 25 years of service to the Real Estate Industry. We are happy to have such experienced professionals working for Milestone! 25 Years in Real Estate is a real Milestone!!

Thank you Louise, Dennis and Ray for being such wonderful representatives for Milestone Realty Consultants.

Louise Miller, Milestone Agent and President-Elect of the Greater Louisville Association of Realtors

In a follow up to Vote for Louise, on Thursday, September 2, 2010 it was announced that Milestone agent, Louise Miller, won the election for President-elect of the Greater Louisville Association of Realtors (GLAR) . Louise has years of experience in the Real Estate Industry selling Louisville houses and will use that experience to lead the GLAR membership to high levels of greatness in this period of recovery. Home Ownership

Home Ownership

With the recent release of an extensive study on Social Benefits of Home ownership and Stable Housing 2010 by the National Association of Realtors®, it is more apparent than ever that the American Dream of owning a home is the heart of America.  You can read the full report at Realtor.org (the link will direct you to a PDF).

The financial benefits of home ownership are obvious – mortgage interest deduction on taxes, building equity in your own home rather then paying rent to a landlord but some of the less obvious benefits are equally as important:

  • Educational achievement
  • Civic participation
  • Health benefits
  • Crime
  • Public assistance
  • Property maintenance and improvement

NAR’s study identified research from government, industry and academia that identified the relationship between home ownership and stable communities according to RISMedia.  They report that homeowners move far less frequently than renters and therefore are embedded into the same neighborhood and community for longer.  This allows for social cohesion, ultimately resulting in social benefits and stronger communities.

NAR President Vicki Cox Golder states, “Realtors care as much about keeping families in their homes as they do about helping them find the home of their dreams.  Social benefits do not arise solely from ownership, but also from greater housing stability and social ties associated with less frequent moves among homeowners.

In my own neighborhood, which is predominately owner-occupied Kentucky houses, I have observed the formation of a strong Homeowner’s Association, Neighborhood Crime Watch, Social Activities as well as Physical Activities such as runners, bikers, walkers, etc.  Neighbors watch out for each other and anticipate long lasting relationships between each other and their children.

As Realtors® it is vital that we embrace and understand the dynamics behind home ownership and continue to study and learn the motivation, needs and desires of the home owner today and the home owner of the future.
